When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - Somerset - 05-08-2010 Overtaking vehicles going up hill in a 3 lane system whereby those coming down hill are restrained by double white lines in the third lane. THere's me doing 60ish going up hill past a few vans and a car, there's a fair bit of traffic coming down the hill but I wasn't expecting Mr. bright blue Focus ST to try and overtake them all. He pulls fully out into my lane (he's about 30 metres ahead of me then sees me! He brakes very hard to try and regain his original position and I manage to squeeze through the gap between the car to my left and him knocking my elbow armour on his door mirror on the right. My mate who was some 20m behind me actually squinted through his partially closed eyes because he didn't want to see the gore. This was the first time I have had to pull over as I was feeling sick with shock, joint impact would have been about 120mph, do you think I would have survived? How close was your last near miss? When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - Cavey - 05-08-2010 ooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.... That was close. Pleased to hear you're OK. I hate those types of road. There's one near Sailsbury I regularly use and I'm always extra cautious when using - for this very reason. When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - wicklamulla - 05-08-2010 Tuesday noight in the Three Tuns, Silverton, Devon. Jeezuz that sounds really scary, did you swing round and give chase??? did anyone stop or pull over etc ??? Those double white lines, are they solid or broken ? When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - Studley Ramrod - 05-08-2010 My only 'touching cloth' moment was a few weeks back when I was overtaking a nice lady in a big BMW and she pulled out to overtake the car in front of her. Chose her moment perfectly, and waited until I was level with her front door before launching out toward me, no indicators etc. I missed the opposite curve by millimetres, luckily she then saw me and braked. Bit of a blur as it all happened in a split second. A mile or so down the road and she was behind me at a set of lights, stopped about 20 meters away Prolly cause I was still shakin me head and givin it the knob ed jestures, as ya doo Welcome to the world of the reality check. When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - newstu - 05-08-2010 think i would still be wearing a pampers if that one happened to me!! when i was a yoof i went haring towards a bend on my RD400 to realise that, in my haste to adjust the rear brake, I hadn't fully done up the nut that locks the adjusting pin and it had come adrift. My right foot went to nothing and I cacked meself as i took the bend a whole lot faster than i had wanted to! When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - dmmsta - 05-08-2010 Closest moment for me was HERE Although it doesn't look it on a map the left hander by the junction of Maidstone Road & St Ann's Green Lane (heading from bottom to top on the map) is relatively blind. As I dropped into the corner, and I wasn't going quick, there was a lorry with a flat-bed trailer right across my side of the road, turning into the side lane. Straighten up, grabbed a handful (and footful) of brake then had to take the verge to get passed as I wasn't stopping in time. Was the horrible feeling of running on the dirt willing it not to tram-line into the hedge followed by a swift pull over at the next best place, followed by a rush of adrenalin - followed by a cigarette to bring everything back to reality. Thankfully I've not had another since. Know what you mean about the 3 lane roads - I come down Wrotham Hill (A20) on the way home. I'm in the single lane, with broken white lines, so I can overtake if clear. Have had a couple of people pull half way out to overtake before realising I'm there, but nothing as close as your escapade! The lines they crossed were solid, I didn't slow down because I had a lot of traffic coming up the hill and some were in the midst of changing lanes, would have been bedlum. We all pulled over about 5 miles up the road where I had a cup of tea.<!--quoteo(post=172962:date=Thu 5th Aug 2010, 04:54 PM:name=dmmsta)-->QUOTE(dmmsta @ Thu 5th Aug 2010, 04:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->Closest moment for me was HERE<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->Holy poo! that's not good, I dread the pricks who drive round this area with bale spikes on the front of the tractor at headlight level being just there on a bend in the summer, it has been known.Envy you having a fag, I gave up some years ago but it would definatley have been a point where I would have had one too. When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - TonyDevil - 05-08-2010 i've noticed a hell of a lot more people trying to kill me on the 9er compared to the 850, especially while filtering with filtering i reckon they dont hear me coz the 9er has quiet original exhausts, and my 850 dont doesnt explain the not seeing me bit, i've gone from a dirty black bike, to a clean silver one will be sorting out the new exhausts for the 9er at the weekend, if i survive the commute tomorrow.... The chap had his two kids in the back and I think he was paying more attention to them than anything else. I actually hit his drivers window with the carbon knuckles of my gloves, think that gave him a sphincter twitch to almost match mine! Have also had an old chap turn right into a field gate without indicating as I went to overtake. Fortunately he was going very slow cos I braked for a split second, realised that wasn't going to work so hit full throttle instead... made it past with a couple of mm to spare! Had the shakes for about fifteen minutes afterwards. Wadda Rush ! Bet you were hyper fer days ! When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - marko67 - 05-08-2010 Sad to say the last time I gripped the seat was totally my fault. Riding back up north on Boxing day, a bit tired & seedy I chose an alternative route to avoid the big tailbacks on the main highway at Christmas. their was still a fair bit of traffic on my road which is pretty fast & windy. I was behind 3 vehicles, 2 of which were towing boats when I spied a nice overtaking opportunity through a series of bends so I committed myself to a full throttle pass knowing that the cars could not pass on that bit, what I did not know about was the 2 oncoming cars hidden in a dip in the middle of the bends which appeared as if by magic once I was fully charging. It happened very quick, I was cranked over & just focused on the gap popping through like a cork, probably with inches to spare. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The car drivers must have crapped themselves too, I really had the red mist down & was honkin along! I still cringe thinking about it, I pride myself on riding well & avoiding exactly that kind of dangerous decision. Their are enough eejits on the road without me joining in. Bet you were hyper fer days !<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yup it was caused by my foot rest digging in and lifting me up then as I got to the white line and the bricks from 1927 when it was built by Adolf and some more came out!! No not hyper for days!! I carry one of the credit card sized tickets in my wallet (Where the pic of my wife and kids used to be!) and get a big grin every time I open it..... No other track day will ever come close to doing that muther of a track, every corner is like the Mountian at Cadwell... When Did You Last Come Close To Crapping Yourself? - slartybartfarst - 06-08-2010 My steady riding always goes to pot when I'm caught up by another bike - especially if I'm behind traffic. Coming along the A682 (Britain's most dangerous road apparently) I was sat behind a couple of cars doing 40 to 50mph in a NSL area. I was looking for an overtaking opp when a bike catches up. Road opens up with short straight into 90 right, shorter climbing straight and blind 90 left. There's a clear view to the left hand bend. Assuming both cars would slow for the first corner I set off to jump them both... but car one decided unlike previous bends not to slow so I had to overtake him on the bend. I'm sure the bike was more than capable of doing the job even quicker but it put the wind up me. And I just know I'd have done the cars one at time if I hadn't got a bike behind me. Durrr! Thing is earlier in the day I'd been behind a car being driven fairly swiftly and a Street Triple came piling up behind me. As he had clearly been making progress I gave him room to jump me. So he sat there, and sat there, opportunities came and went. So I thought okay and went to overtake the car and lo for he was large in my mirror! And as soon as I pulled back in he was gone. I find a good few blips of the throttle when filtering is a good announcement that a bikes coming down the outside. |
