We got a load of hand sanitiser delivered at work the other day, it seems there's a lot about that is alcahol free using benzalkonium chloride as it's active ingredient.
As soon as I heard alcahol free alarm bells started ringing so I got round to looking the stuff up today, it seems that although it claims to kill coronavirus and cites european centre for disease prevention and control the only mention I can find is relating to canine coronavirus, a related but different strain that is of no threat to us whatsoever, the american centre for disease control states the active ingredient as unreliable for covid19.
If you are using this stuff check the ingredients and don't let it lull you into a false sense of security, it 'may' work on covid19 but there is no evidence that it will and washing your hands with soap will likely be far more effective, a little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing!
I can see a lot of folk using this stuff in place of washing hands, DON'T!
And no your 80% proof vodka won't do it either as it's only 40% alcahol, you need at LEAST 60% to be effective.

I am a great believer in a bar of SOAP for cleaning the hands. Then I have just read that soap kills the protective 'membrane' (or summat) around the virus and renders it harmless. The article was by Dr Liam Fox who started writing a book on the suject 4 years ago. I also remember reading years ago that you cannot catch things off soap. I do not believe that domestic hand washes are any use currently. This is all received information for me, so take it as FWIW.

Just the act of washing mechanically cleans it off so wether alive or dead it's not there to get into your eyes/nose/mouth/(insert favourite orifice here) and infect you, a hand sanitiser removes nothing so needs to kill the nasties to be any use, I did see a good thing on tv last week about how to self isolate where the doctor presenting was cleaning down a communal basin and pointing out that there is no need for anti-anything just general surface cleaner as you are wiping nasties off not killing them, he also showed HIS medicing cabinet with HIS multivitamins that He took when feeling ill and saying that they did not work and are a waste of money, it's nice to see even the pros go along with the same old snake oil that us mere muppets do.

Have to agree an intense hand wash with soap, interlock your fingers top and bottom, thumbs, grip the tips of your fingers together and dont forget your wrists, then wash your face with clean hands, my hands become so red and sore at work i'm having to use hand moisturiser constantly and that's after wearing gloves, we also use a synthetic bleach amongst other things to clean surfaces, so a bleach dilute should do the job at home..

I use a 66% alcohol sanitiser after shopping and before I enter Ma's house. Rest of the time it's scrubadubdub with soap then a moisturiser to help maintain my beautiful hands.

Johns Hopkins University, sent this excellent summary to avoid contagion. Share it with you because it is very clear:
* The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes their genetic code (mutation) and converts them into aggressor and multiplier cells.
* Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.
* The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam). By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.
* HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use water above 25 degrees Celsius for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.
* Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.
* Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.
* Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.
* NO ANTIBIOTICS. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; they cannot kill what is not alive with anthobiotics, but quickly disintegrate its structure with everything said.
* NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only between 3 hours (fabric and porous), 4 hours (copper, because it is naturally antiseptic; and wood, be cause it removes all the moisture and does not let it peel off and disintegrates). ), 24 hours (cardboard), 42 hours (metal) and 72 hours (plastic). But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.
* The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars. They also need moisture to stay stable, and especially darkness. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster.
* UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask is perfect. Be careful, it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin, eventually causing wrinkles and skin cancer.
* The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.
* Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.
* NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65% to kill the virus.
* LISTERINE WORKS. It is 65% alcohol.
* The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.
* This is super said, but you have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom.
* You have to HUMIDIFY HANDS DRY from so much washing them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.
* Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there.

Got a delivery today at work , SOMEONE had cut a neat hole in the box and aquired 3 bottles, phoned the company and they said that every customer is saying the same thing , \!!!!!!!!!!!, better check Ebay and see if they ended up on there, got my Government letter telling me that I am a key worker, the last time I got a letter like that was during the fuel blockade stating that I could go to the front of the queue , AYE RIGHT, my teeth would have been missing in minutes, stay safe people , its a jungle out there :good:

Milton sterilising fluid works, it's just a diluted bleach though, therefore bleach works. But diluted of course !

The Milton label points out that in even weak concentrations it cleans surfaces of 99.9% of germs and bacteria, including coronaviruses
