Running Fast And Hot - LIAW - 02-02-2025

well today I thought it was time to fire the bike up as it has stood doing nothing since before christmas when it ran smashingly, it started easily so I left it to run and warm up, a few minutes later and I thought that smells hot but put that down to being in a small shed,

then a few more minutes later I realised the downpipes were starting to glow red which I've never seen before, and I also realised that it was ticking over at just over 2000rpm,

so I guess the cold start system could be faulty then, there is a slide on the throttle bodies that when pressed inward from the clutch side allows the engine revs to drop to normal, when I release finger pressure from the 'slide' it moves outward again and the revs go up to above 2000 again,

as I haven't had this problem before, or any fuel injection problems on any bike before, is this an easy fix ?

(I have to learn all over again)

Hey LIAW,

I dunno much aboot these 9ers bit I so know Lee Henty used to do a repair kit ferrum. Very very common problem so a 9er bhoyo will definitely have the answer.

Easy i fix take cs mech apart clean it and fit a little bellows. I still have a few in my spares box. Do not grab the pin with mole grips, it will deform it. Tank up,airbox off to get at it.

excuse my ignorance but what is a bellows ?, if it will fix my problem how do I get one and how much is it, thank you

I want to be sure the bike runs properly before I make an attempt at the cosmetic side  Smile

The rubber bellows stops the issue happening again, you will still need to clean the C/S mechanism.

Ohhh i thought you HAD TO SHOUT REAL LOUD AT THEM!

Running Fast And Hot - LIAW - 03-02-2025

would it be possible to enlighten me as to the bellows thing, I can't get my mind past a funnel shaped accordion thing used for pumping air into a blacksmiths forge

(I whispered just in case)

You use part of a rubber bellows more usually used to protect steering servos on model boats. Snip off two bumps on narrow end. Replacement screws are M5x 22 and M5 x 16, two of each, plus 4 spring washers. All in stainless.

Lee H did a write-up some time ago and this info is based on my use of that back in 2015. I actually already had a bellows from model boat building!

This link should go to a post of mine with two pix. http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/index.php?showtopic=33934#entry342226

The left, taken from the front of the bike during a full valve check, has the cold start mech. at the top. You can see how mucky it can get after just 26,400 miles. The two Phillips / JIS screw heads are difficult to work so when rebuilding use M6 socket heads.

The other pic, after rebuild, just shows waterproof grease on the CSM slide - and the difficulty of the screw head access.

thank you for the info, I'll get into it as soon as the weather warms
