Cyclist Gets Set Upon By Cages - muddy - 30-07-2012

Just came across this on YT. What I found astounding were the number of comments that blamed the cyclist. And that woman

Lucky, whilst at the same time, unlucky.

You can add me to that list.
70% Black Car , 29.95% Pedal Cyclist , 0.04% Lady Driver , 0.01% Higgs Boson.

How fast was that cyclist approaching that junction? Sheesh, even I slow down occasionally!
Would be interesting to see a days worth of that Go-Pro footage and how invincible he thought he was. That guys bike would have been crushed sooner or later methinks.

Good luck missus!

After being knocked off my push bike myself 3 weeks ago today by a car that hit my handle bars which turned my front wheel into some railings and stopped my bike dead and I carried on with the bike attached to my feet. I have every sympathy and both cars drivers should be taken outside and shot in front of their families.......

Well you can guarantee it was withing the speed limit, he had a flashing front light working and he appeared to be clear of other vehicles and still wasn't looked at and seen.

I'm guessing if you had been doing the same speed you wouldn't have slowed as you had the right of way, you could have had HiZiz on with a headlight and that driver may have still driven into your path.

thank goodness he had a camera going to prove his case as i am thinking the lying drivers would have put him in the wrong somehow.

Also it is totally irelevent how he rode his bike in other areas, it is what happened there that matters.

All this could have, might have done this or that if he had done something else is conjecture on something that has not or may not happen.

I was brought up to understand the priority on the road is pedestians, horses, Cyclists, motorcylist and then motor vehicles. In other words look after the vulnerable.

Interesting responses.
I just remind myself that this video has been posted for a reason and that it is showing me only one aspect of the event.
If life has taught me one thing, it is that it takes two.......
Still, it makes me smile as the cyclist is forced to watch his bike being mangled.
No... f***nno... sh** bikey!!
You gotta ask how much this individual has invested to produce this material, why and what is their mindset?

Neither of your posts make sense to me. The camera documented the event, what other aspects are there that the camera didn't video. At a guestimate, he was doing between 15-20 mph and was SMIDSY'd. Lucky he wasn't on a motorbike doing 30mph. This was bad enough, but to then have his bike run over and almost get himself mangled by a woman driver who refused to respond to his screams, he must've been really shaken up. A witness said he thought he was going to get crushed. And this is funny???

At a guess I'd say, like many of us, his mindset was that he'd been knocked off or had close shaves before and used a video camera to have evidence in case of an accident. What else could he have been doing? Riding around in hope that somebody would run him over so, should he live, he could claim compensation?

Well said Muddy

Cyclist Gets Set Upon By Cages - TKH - 01-08-2012

To my mind, the video footage from the cyclists perspective said that the cars were in the wrong. The black car pulled across the cyclist who appeared to have right of way and the woman in silver car must have been doing her makeup, on the phone, or something and looks like she'd have done a runner if she could have done.

The other fella on his bike was lucky she didn't try and get out the car at the moment he overtook her!

Must get my camera set up on my bike.......

However, this is all too often the view from someone else's perspective - YT linky

In the second link it is clearly the cyclists fault, he's got no reason to complain, definitely his fault.

In the first video, it's clearly the black cars fault as he turns into the cyclists path, then the stupid woman runs him over, how she didn't see him is beyond me.

The perceived speed is due to the use of a 170' wide angle lens, he really isn't going very fast.

I do however think the cyclist could have perhaps avoided the accident by a bit of forward planning, you really do have to expect car drivers to pull into your path at any time. This also demonstrates that hi-vis clothing doesn't work, if that woman looked at all she would have seen him cartwheeling though the air!

I had a woman drive into me once when on my GPX750. I was stationary, she drove into the back of me, not fast but bumped me forward. I parked the bike on front of her car and asked what the hell she was doing, 'you're in my way young man' was the response! FFS, bloody volvo driver!

I'll go with your guestimate and guess.
Just guessing myself, but all I have to go by are four seconds of video here.
My take is that the driver of the second car could easily claim that they were unsighted, being that a van turned across them at a crucial moment, that a car assumed the right of way to perform a similar manoeuvre, incorrectly as it turns out and a cyclist supermanned in front of them in a most unusual manner.
It could be possible to have been making all the appropriate observations and yet still have missed the incident before pulling away.
Never assume a high-viz makes you vizzed.
I see aggressive pedal cycling everyday and it makes me seethe. I've decided that this was just that. I only have four seconds of video here.
I take the trouble to recognise when other road users are unsighted or distracted. I recognise that I'm vulnerable. I make eye contact. I slow down. I also recognise when others do none of these.
Makes sense to me. I'd not like this video to be used against me in the context that the rider suggests in the YouTube post. It sucks, I guess.

So I did a bit of digging (not much really!)

Watch this
Then this
Then this
Then this

This guy uses the chip on his shoulder to balance the weight of his helmet cam. Ignores indicators, tries to ride through lorries, is oblivious to developing situations and other road users.

I guess!
