Confidence In Riding ? - arn1e - 11-10-2012

Hi, I have been riding about 4 years since I had my test but this probably equtes to not a great deal of actual riding time, am i right in assuming that a lot of people on here a very accomplished and confident riders? I would love to come out with others on rideouts, would this be ok with others as I am not the fastest rider there is and maybe riding with others would increase my confidence too. I would love to go abroad on the TDM at some time but that wopuld be a big ask for me at the moment, are there any others on here that haven't been riding long either ?

Bonjour Arn-one-e are you near Le Havre?

I would say there is a varied mix of riding abilites on ear. Another thing that oi would think about is getting up your confidence before thinking of riding ooot with other. We have at least one professional trainer type person on ear so he might have some wiser words than oi.

Go and do the IAM course. You will get a good guidence in safe riding plus it is nice to have your riding endorsed by others.

They also have ride outs where all riders should be riding to the "system" so should be more trustworthy.

I think by doing BikeSAfe you will get a reduction on the IAM Associate membership fee.

Best thing I did.

Remember when in a group to ride your own ride and don't get sucked into going quicker than your ability.

Thanks guys, I am not too bad, I think I just worry abit sometimes when riding in groups if I get something wrong or misjudge, it is probably just me. I feel great when I am out on my own. I guess we all get it wrong at times ?. I am in a local bike club here and they do some runs but with work I have only managed to get on one of the evening ones, I am hoping to try some of the longer 100 - 200 mile sunday runs next year, this will help with the confidence I reckon too ?

Yep, just go riding. I've been riding for 38 years, usually on my own. Since I got the TDM 2 years ago, I've met up twice for a run out in England, twice over here, and been to Euroland twice. I don't consider myself a fast rider, but there's a wide variety of speeds/styles on a ride out. Ask for a meet, you'll enjoy it. Whereabouts are you?

I'd also recommend IAM. You will learn how to be a faster smoother rider and will also gain group riding experience. What part of the country are you in?

Welcome Arnie.. I concur with the above advice, Ride in your 'comfort zone' and don't worry about the quicker riders..

they may be more experienced or they may be idiots.

Confidence In Riding ? - Studley Ramrod - 11-10-2012

Same as you, I'd had a few years riding solo before I went on my first rideout with another 20 or so Carpedians. Bloody loved it I did <img src='http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> Went to the seaside for fish chips n mushy peas. round trip of about 300 miles.

I'd say the same as others, keep within your own limits. Some go fast, some not so fast etc so you'll find yourself slotted in somewhere that suits your ability.

Confidence In Riding ? - arn1e - 11-10-2012

Looks like i'm in good company then, I look forward to it <img src='http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Dont confuse "Accomplished" and "Confident" - two completely different things.

Don't go riding in groups unless you are mentally tough enough to "ride your own ride" at your own pace, slowing when necessary.

Search out a local RoADAR group

Confidence In Riding ? - Rallyist - 12-10-2012

Sign up for a police 'Bike Safe' ride and get a ride appraisal then get their advice, most will be members of the local advanced riders groups.
