You see a helmet for

£97.

You don't have the cash

so you borrow £50 off your brother and £50 off your wife.

£50 +£50=£100

You buy the helmet, and

have £3 change.

You give your wife £1

and your brother £1 and keep the other £1 for yourself.

Now you owe your wife

£49 and your brother £49.

£49 +£49=£98+your

£1=£99

Where is the missing £1

Divorce the wife and 1 quid is the least if your worries...

I Hate Sums - TDMTAM - 28-07-2013

Where can you get decent cake for £1?

SHMBO (business manager) has just explained this and made perfect sense of it. (It's in the wording not the maths). I'm tempted to include her phone number so you can all ring her and ask her to explain while I go in search of quid's worth of cake !! Smartarse!

It is in your pocket.

I Hate Sums - steve27bha - 30-07-2013

Who says £1 is "missing"?

Do it again but with £99 / 2 x £50 / refund nil / 2 x £50 + £1 = £101/ £1 "gained" / ???? - inconsistent - or a money-making scheme the bankers would surely have exploited!

Consider what you own and what you owe and check they balance.

It has to be in the wording because if you borrowed 50 from your wife and 50 from your brother and gave 3 back to your wife (a smart move) you would owe 47+50= 97, the cost of the helmet.
