Hi everyone, just did the airbox mod. It doesn't seem to have made much difference with regards to the jerkeyness, but it does seem to be a lot smoother, pulling steadier from the lower rev range. One of the differences is it has started popping more on the over-run, which I like a lot, with the occational backfire. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yahoo.gif[/img] I think there was such an increase in bottom end torque when I fitted the race pipes, that it has somewhat disguised the improvement. I'll be taking notes on the fuel consumption and see if there are any improvements in that area.

New to the forum. Thx to all members for sharing valuable information and experiences.
Riding a 900A from 2005. Seen the airbox mod here and tried it today. I preferred the easiest way. That is to remove the hose from top of the airbox. It is a miracle really. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yahoo.gif[/img] Most important change is no more shakiness around 4000 rpm. Also it is much more smooth and comfortable. Not had a chance to try it with the hard corners yet but I'm sure it will be easier.
Also checked the CO levels. C1 was 16 and C2 was 17 originally. I will be trying 18 and 20 for a while which sounded better to me. Will let you know!

Yet another satisfied 900 customer for the airbox mod! Jerkiness not entirely gone but that could be down to riding style at the end of the daily commute. Big improvement in the pick-up though. Just a touch of the throttle and the revs surge - helps with blipping on gear changes, helps with powering on at around 2200 rpm when you've forgotten to change down.

I also made the airbox mod, together with K&N airfilter, before travelling around france and spain earlier in the year; not only does it improve throttle response etc but also averaged over 55 mpg with normal riding ... brilliant! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/good.gif[/img]

I've done this mod this week( just blocked the vac line off the throttle body ) and found it a great easy mod that has big differance to the low rpm smoothness.

Did this mod too about 3 days ago and cant beleve why I took so long to get round to it, its made such a differance to low range smothness, wished I'd have done it as soon as I read about it on here.

Hi all,
I need some advice...
I found the mod and decided to apply. But there was a note about 2002 defective ECU:
Inactivating the Airbox Intake Flap does not fix any issue due to a defective ECU.
The first batch of TDM900 shipped in 2002 had a defective ECU giving injection issues.
Check the ECU part number starting with "5PS" for the last digit :
- A "0" means a defective ECU, this is normaly solved under warranty.
- A "1" means a right ECU, no worries these are the good ones.
This is effective for the 5PS1 - 2002 only"
So I check and [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img] yes, my ECU is with "0" at the end...
Do you know what "this is normaly solved under warranty" is, and do I have to change it i so on. I did not apply the airboxmod anyway because I dont know what will be the result.

normally solved under warranty means: you take the bike to a yamaha dealer and they change the faulty TPS for a non faulty TPS free of charge [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/good.gif[/img]

the 'ECU problem' was banded about alot a few years back and a few people had it changed under warranty, a few said it improved things and others said it made no diference in their opinion whatsoever !!
Vnikolov i would do the airbox mod anyway as it should improve the bike, but if Yamaha want to give you a new ECU i would take it anyway.

Welcome Vnikolov to the place where TeDiuM gains a whole new (improved!) definition [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]
Your 2002 9'er will gain improved (softer) on/off throttle control with the air box modification. Making low speed riding easier. You'll also find you can run the engine between 2000 and 3000rpm with less vibration from the engine. And the best bit of all, if you want to reverse the modification, do modification "I : Unplugging the flap actuator" detailed here.

Never did bother with the Mod on my 2003 9'er.
Now have an 07 9'er, supposedly with new and improved TPS, does the mod make a difference on the newer models????

I think you might find that there was a misunderstanding, There was never a problem with the ECU, I checked this with Yam UK, the information was passed around by people who didn't understand how modern electronics work.
The problem was with the TPS( throttle position sensor) and these were replaced under warranty, it is easy to find out if yours has been done, simply phone the main importers ( Yamaha BG?) or get your local Yam dealer to do it for you and give them your frame number an they will know if it has or has not been done.
Mine had not so I booked in to my local Yam dealers and it was done free of charge.

Yes there was, more info somewhere here on Carpe along with possible affected ECU/frame numbers. The reason you didn't know this by checking with Yamaha UK is that unlike Yamaha Italy and various other countries, Yamaha UK refused to admit the problem and replaced them for those that complained under warranty (and not as a recall as some were stating).

Did the mod (version 1) to my new 900 last night. Noticeable difference but not earth shattering. I plugged the blue/grey rubber hose with a snug fitting screw. Anyone know if there is a need to plug the brass pipe the hose was previously connected to ??
Also, I know it's easy enough to change back but does the first service at 1600 km involve anything that would require the mechanic to lift the tank ? Thought I heard that it involved something to do with the injectors but not sure.
