What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - Wharfe - 08-02-2016

What did I do to my TDM today? Treated it to some company in the garage.... Ok so my recent intro to the world of TDM, a 1997 Mk2,  was a major revelation, I love it to bits. So having just got rid of my other ride, a 2013 XT660z which was not going to get anything like the use it deserved (and was frankly too frikn' tall) I, er, went and bought another TDM... I'm sure I'm not alone here in such daftness - aren't I...?

Oh, it's a 12 plate, in black. Not much chance to ride since picking her up Saturday evening, thanks to Storm Imogen (scarily windy round here right now) but well pleased nevertheless. May - or may not - get rid of the 850 later in the year but to be honest she makes a crackin' ride to work, and with just 10k on the clock I'd be daft to get rid just yet, my commute is 52 miles round....

Repaired all the bodged wiring  problems on the mk1.  Some of the mods didn't make sense, like 8 inches of mains wire added to the horn wiring when it was only 1 inch too short to start off with ! Rerouted the front harness and repaired the wires which had been rubbed to the core by the steering yoke.

Replaced the left clutch lever (£5.50 from Sports Car Breakers, SCB, near Edinburgh)....the mirror mount thread had been crossthreaded.

Not much left to do, -  inspect the steering head bearings, swap the rear brake caliper for a good one and fit new pads, probably clean and lube the front caliper pistons to be sure.

I phoned for an insurance quote.....£37.22 to add it to my existing policy, with all mods declared, and all benefits (legal, breakdown, leather cover) of my existing policy for the 900. £32 of that was the admin charge to change the policy !

who you insured with ?

Worth checking the front sprocket hasn't been welded and the gearbox doesn't slip third gear.  Also worth remembering that you need to check the oil level regularly, some mk1's can use quite a bit.

Oh yeah, we need pics. Smile

Pics to follow ☺

Im with Bennets. I normally go cheap and cheerful but after the legal wrangling of last accident in April i guees i still feel insecure.....so im fully comp, full European breakdown cover and 90 days in Europe allowed, helmet and leathers upto £750, full legal cover etc. £197 on the tdm900. Could have got it for £100 elsewhere but no frills and only a single bike policy. Bennets allows upto 4 bikes at a time (including pillion and luggage cover )

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - ramotdm - 09-02-2016

my 2 bike policy cost me £217 last year, bikesure, £100 excess, fully comp

for the 900 and the Blackbird

You can't really argue with reasonable prices like these, some people never bother though.

They should get a  good hard kick in the slats as well as a fine.....they won't want to sit down on a another bike for a long time

Bennetts tried to rip me off in the 2nd year, make sure you check out the competition on renewal time, you'll do well to beat Carole Nash for value. This is all on a separate post though so git ye'sel scannin'..........

in my experience they all rip you off at renewal time, , I haven't had a renewal in the past 10 years for any vehicle which was less than the previous  one.

I totally agree with shopping around !

Fitted new battery in the Mk2,

What a PITA that job is

Ran the bike for a while, to remind the engine what it's there for.

Leave it out in the rain for a wash on Saturday.  :rotflmmfao:

Mot Monday.

At least that's the plan.

I so need new cans on the Niner. Wink

Added a new taller screen and top box on the 900.

Had the suspension set up, big difference in the way the bike feels now.  Very happy. Smile

More time for the mk1.

Investigated the tight steering, which was due to the top cap water seal binding on the frame.

Stripped the bearings anyway - look like they're good taper bearings and the grease was a little dirty, renewed the grease and seated them again.... nice and smooth now ☺

Shimmed the sidestand pivot because the bike had a hell of a lean on it when parked.

Also fitted new choke cable, remounted tank properly (had no front bolts) and repaired the fuel tap threads (was mounted with cable ties !) As well as run the fuel pipes correctly (thanks for the tip rally)

Just needs a rear brake disc (got one coming soon).....fitted new pads and replacement caliper.

All this and probably going to sell it on - was fixing it up for my mate who's going to do his test this year, but he needs an eye operation and has been advised against doing any biking till after summer.
