The MK2 Lives!

Jumped started it off the 900 and after a good spin to get some fuel into it it fired up and ran like a watch at a solid tickover up to the fan kicking in. :badgerrock:

Gonna need a new battery though  Wink  and
Jeez its going to need a clean before the MOT (where's Cats when you need him!)

Solar charger seems to be keeping the 900 happy as long as it gets a bit of sun on it. :good:

Quote:Prepped for the MOT, chain is almost out of adjustment range and the rear tyre is low (haven't got around to swapping it yet), but those things apart it should be a solid pass...... fingers crossed !
They will check your chain adjustment range? K'inell.

My wof (MOT) is honk, honk, wink, wink, flash, flash, brake, brake, wiggle, wiggle, 6mm, 5mm.

Must have a lot of data to hand for all those chain  "ranges" haha (after all many over tighten the TDM's)

All he does is look at how far back the rear axle is in the swingarm, according to the alignment marks. I think he just points it out as a courtesy when you're almost out of range.

I know it needs doing anyway....needs to be made a short wheel base again
[quote name="harvey krumpet" post="327464" 6mm, 5mm.[/quote]

Not allowed to use tools here. If you put fork gaitors over the seals they're not able to check the seals !

Me mm's was tread depth. Heh.

I get me honky, blinky, flashy bits done, tires, brake pads and wheel bearings. Takes longer to get me hemlet and gloves on and off than the wof/mot done.

Ah fixitsan, I've crossed me wires up... I thought you meant as-in slack... Smile

Easy mistake to make Smile

The MOT tester's advice says , to the effect "The chain/belt must not have excessive slack and be in good condition, the guard must be secure and not fouling'

They can argue that a 'stretched' (worn link pins) chain cannot be in good condition due to the inherent wear

Those were the good old days here.

A more stringent standard has done wonders for the  parts supply chain business.....probably made a lot of bikes safer too

Bought it a new Scottoiler RMV  as the old very extremely old one is no longer functioning (done zillions of miles giving sterling service so not too fussed it is US).

Investigation seems to indicate that it was blocked at the outlet and it has now gone into the trash. I tried a rinse with meths and a puff (9er rider) of air butt (deliberate) no joy. Tongue

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - fixitsan - 05-02-2016

Took it for the MOT.....passed with an advisory for rear tyre... got a race scrub all ready to go on but need to paint the wheel first.

Compliments on the condition for a 93k bike too. Happy days !

One of the exhaust brackets decided to let go on the bottom connection of my pipes - So went to Halfords and got a couple of much stronger car ones. Went on a treat last night and reckon the exhaust itself will snap before the new clamped joint lets go. Does not look as pretty - but I have piece of mind!

New chain and sprockets at 26600 miles. There was probably a bit more life in the old chain. I've only adjusted it twice in the 20000 miles I've had it. The drive sprocket was looking well worn though. Got an Afam kit from Kettenmax in Germany which worked out at just under £100. The only English suppliers I could find were a bit more expensive and the ones I phoned wanted an extra £10 to supply an endless chain! So I've had the swing arm off and greased everything profusely. The job wasn't too daunting but I think it will take my knees a few days to recover from all that squatting down. Oh for an elevating work bench! I was just about to go for a test ride when I noticed the headlight was out. Couldn't face rummaging about in the nose to get at that. It will have to wait for another day.

Checked the charging system on the Mk1 and the regulator is the culprit charging at 2500 rpm any higher and it cuts the voltage so new one required. bugger

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - tediumwannabe - 05-02-2016

Took a spin to the garage and applied the Ultraseal (£17 Fleabay) to my new rear tyre and the front tyre, had a 10 mile ride to spread the gloop before the rain started.

Home, and fitted new frame/engine bobbins (Fleabay again, £33) after taking a spill a few weeks ago in the snow and smashing one.

Now, when's the sun coming out?

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - Catteeclan - 06-02-2016

Rumor has it the sun's out tomorrow so I might get to ride it for a bit. That'll do for me.

Finally got around to overhauling the rear caliper - new piston & seals.

I think the old piston had had it  Rolleyes

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - fixitsan - 06-02-2016

Picked up a Mk1.....

Bit of a mixed bag but nothing too horrendous either

Bad bits - clutch cable dragging, choke cable disconnected, Left mirror mounting thread stripped, rear shock weeping. Front end wiring not tied back and has been fouling all around headstock. Headstock bearings stiff as a seized hinged. Rear brake had seized up and he still rode it until the paint on the caliper was bubbling.......the front brakes feel like they've got air in them.

Better bits - engine sound, had new camchain 3000 miles ago with oil and filter change, coolant blue coloured with antifreeze and with no oil film. All electrics work as they should. Some parts like the forks have been repainted almost perfectly...it's had a tumble at some point but nothing serious.

Frame looks like it's been brush painted.

Going to replace the rear caliper tomorrow and bleed front and rear brakes with new brake fluid and then see how it rides, once I've checked the headstock bearings first  Smile

Alright for £500  Smile

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - fixitsan - 07-02-2016

Stripped off my mk1's bodywork, to look under her dress.....ahem

Anyway the choke cable pull assembly is seized so I've ordered a new cable/assembly. The clutch cable  cleaned up well after flooding with cleaning fluid and then dribbling  oil down inside it so it's smooth and not notchy at all now. Identified some wiring which I had better renew.

Actually started thinking maybe I should keep the mk1 and sell the 900 ? !

I did some asking around for offers on it's number plate ***7 OHN  (John) and am getting quotes up to £350, depending on how much of the transfer and reregistering I do myself, so that could be useful !

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - peter-may - 07-02-2016

Full sea trial after valve clearance adjustment. No problems except the tickover appears to have dropped to 1000rpm, contributing to stalling while pulling away twice....once very embarrassingly.   :bag: .....Soon sorted, and I think it'd be a good idea to balance the throttle bodies while I'm there... Wink  Wink....thanks Cliff..

Good job Capn  :good:

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - fixitsan - 08-02-2016

Bled the front brakes on the mk1. The seller had said the rear caliper was seized so his son (who rode the bike) only used the front brakes......but there was literally no fluid in the master cylinder and the lever came all the way back to the bars. It's rock solid now, probably thanks to the braided front hoses.

I thought I was home and dry then but when I tried to screw the right mirror in i realised the master cylinder must be off a different Yamaha (it says Yamaha on it) because the clamp/mirror mount has a standard 10mm thread, so there's been some mix 'n' match going on. Best option is to get a pair of risers/extenders and discard the left thread allen bolt which should secure the right riser and replace it with a standard one. The pair of risers were under £10 so that's not too bad.

(An alternative was to get a clamp with a LH thread, like Brembo, Ducati, KTM...which are available, but only from the states and cost including shipping is about £20 ! )

Lastnight I pulled what I thought was a leaky rear shock.....I took the spring off and realised there was no leak, and that there was a lot of damping in the shock, so the preload must have been way too low for my 16 stone. Once I put it back together and cranked up the preload for 30mm-35mm of sag it all started working correctly    :0)    So that's a shock which I  don't have to buy crossed off the list.

Need to reroute the front end wiring and I'll take a look at the head bearings while I'm at it, to find out if they're knackered or just gorilla tightened and bone dry.
