Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dablik - 18-09-2013 Sounds possible, i think, but did'nt Ali's bugger up on tour !! Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - celticbiker - 18-09-2013 Good point that man. One of mine did go about a week after an oil change but I've had one go in between too. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - MarkyMark - 19-09-2013 Sure - its anecdotal evidence.  The area at the top of the stator appears to be is insufficiently cooled - mine has flaking paint on the to of the stator cover. I think the potential restriction in oil flow rate could exacerbate an existing hot spot and just tip it over the edge. If I recall correctly, Ali had performed a service prior to his touring incident; as had I prior to the Monshau RTT this year.  With a decent battery on the bike, the failure could take some tome to manifest itself. I got all the way home from the Monschau RTT without a generator on a single battery. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - Rallyist - 19-09-2013 Yes mine that failed earlier this year was during the first ride after a service and showed evidence of overheating at the top where all the tails are connected ![]() Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dapleb - 19-09-2013 Well done bhoyos you moight be on to zummat there.  I am not sure that pre-soakin yer filter will make mush difference but identifrying the problem is alot of the battle.  At some point oil git me 9'er wan rewound and we can have a core for emergency distribution. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - Studley Ramrod - 19-09-2013 It's certainly explain why a lot of 9'ers have flaking paint on the stator cover. Could be onto summat there Mark. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dmmsta - 19-09-2013 Can't remember how soon after the last service mind died.  All I know is that it happened within days of getting stuck in a snow storm, and had made the journey home from work at about 5mph most of the way, which I put down to the failure. Headlights on, heated grips on (MAX), and very little charge going back in. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dablik - 19-09-2013 Hmm sounds like a good possibility,, Markymark you shall be for ever known as Sherlock if ya right ![]() Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - MarkyMark - 01-11-2013 OK - so 4,00 miles later and its gone again - well and truly burnt out - again all across the top.  This time I am going to investigate the oil route into the area. The manual describes holes in the shaft which provide oil to the area. I may well poke these with a wire or summat and see if there is any crud in them. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dapleb - 01-11-2013 Will be interestin to know what ewe find MM. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - Studley Ramrod - 01-11-2013 Not 100% sure but I think the rotor also has owil oles. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - Rallyist - 01-11-2013 Was that a rewound one Mark or a used item??? also why do 850's not appear to do this??? Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - MarkyMark - 01-11-2013 Studly - Thanks - will look closely when I get the rotor off. - just taking my time - not sure how I know he rotor position - I have to maintain the TDC mark in the correct position. But the 3 allen bolts look equidistant. Is this where the woodruff key comes into its own?   Rallyist Yes it was a rewind from the guy in Torquay. I have a spare from him which is going in.soon as I figure out how to do the loom bits. He rewound both for me last time and gave me enough wire to get to the connector. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - MarkyMark - 01-11-2013 Loom dimensions   Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - Studley Ramrod - 01-11-2013 The woodruff key lines up with an arrowhead mark on the casing on the 8fiddly. ![]()  Here's a pic of my rotor showing the oil holes around the edge of the rim. Dunno if yours is the same or not.  ![]() Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dapleb - 01-11-2013 Ears an udder view of the badger (on a mkI):  [attachment=o4105]   And ears ya rough-wood key arrow:  [attachment=o4106] Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - celticbiker - 01-11-2013 How many miles is that Mark? 4, 400, 4000 or 40000 Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - MarkyMark - 02-11-2013 That was 4,000 miles - replaced following failure on the 2013 RTT.  I have found a guy in Swindon who is a motorcycle wire/electrics specialist.  When I explained what was happening, he said he did not feel it was a cooling issue. He said it would take a massive earth to burn it out as badly as mine was. He wants the bike, when I have fitted the new stator, to do some diagnostic measurements through the R/R.  I fitted a voltmeter to my dash this afternoon. Will fit new Stator next Saturday morning and update this thread with info. Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - Pantboy - 02-11-2013 Quote:Was that a rewound one Mark or a used item??? also why do 850's not appear to do this??? had to have my 850 stator rewound at around 31000 miles Stator Removal / Replacement Write Up - dapleb - 02-11-2013 Are all the peeps with failures are also running loads of doo-dads on their boikes?
