Quote:Chris, you may already know this.

Yamaha did not agree with the FJR having both panniers and top box at the same time. Dunno why - either weight or aerodynamic considerations I assume.

If you are planning a trip with your mate on the back perhaps you should check it out before loading the bike up.

Well done on the deal and taking your mate out.

Cheers Steve, I had heard that about panniers  and also don't know why.. The answer ought to be in the manual.

An FJR forum member found this in Yamaha literature, applicable to all Yamaha bikes

Quote:

I have come across literature promoting yamaha luggage and it specifed that Yamaha "does not advise using topbox as well as panniers BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF OVERLOADING" for all the yamaha range of motorbikes/luggage combos.

Apparently Gen1 bikes could develop a crack right out at the back of the rear subframe near the rear lights, but mine is a Gen 2 and won't be as badly affected. There is a strengthening bracket available on the aftermarket

I watched a Youtube review by an Aussie bloke who had side and top panniers attached and his wife on the back, and he reported it felt a bit light at the front at times.

The best practice that is being adopted is to use the top box for light stuff only, and tank bag for particularly heavy things. The top box is mounted a long way behind the rear axle, and most of the side panniers are behind the rear axle, which to my mind would naturally cause the front to seem light if they had too much weight in them, especially when  accelerating out of a corner on the side of the tyres

The solution seems simple. I should eat more cake  to keep more weight on the front !

Had the same story with my tracer, but fitted the top box anyway. I don't carry pillion but when I do it's only my daughter.

Interestingly, the local blood bike lot (Norfolk) have fairly recently replaced their aging FJR fleet with Triumph 1200s. They regularly carried a big box on the back with panniers and didn’t have any issues as far as I know. Unlikely they’d have been exceeding any speed limits though, so getting anywhere near the extra loading caused by air speed.

In the Eighties BMW were strongly recommending not using top boxes on R100RT's. In their opinion the aerodynamics were affected by the higher cruising speeds these could attain. So they said that if an owner insisted on having panniers and top box fitted by a BMW workshop they were to sign a document stating that they had read and understood that a speed exceeding 100KPH was forbidden !

We tried it but the few owners getting top boxes and panniers told us to stuff it.  I wonder how other dealerships got one ?

New chain and sprockets fitted and ridden for a bit of keep-alive fun.

Successfully modded the FJR1300 to remove fuel cutting on deceleration, using exactly the same wires as on the TDM.

I'm starting to think all Yamahas from this period use the same method

Sold mine, hopefully new owner will show up here ...eventually.

Now to test whether Suzuki's build quality has improved over the last 20 years, although if not, ACF50 is a wonderful thing.

Finally got around to order the vivid red cocktail paint for my blue front mudguard as I still have the old gaffer taped one on, may look at getting re-mot'd next weekend but boating/beering gets in the way this weekend.

Once paint arrives I will need to build up to actually putting it on, I'll update in another 6 months when the gaffer tape is still there.... Huh

Not today, but yesterday, I finally finished running the 900 in and hit 70k miles.

Took it for another faultless mot. When I asked why they have put noisy exhaust on the last two mots as an advisory they said it was to cover themselves as the ministry have started tightening up the rules.[attachment=o15714]

And still the iPhone photos come out sideways!!

But if its done with the mot mans uncalibrated earhole its meaningless

Took the TDM for a wee run to keep it from suffering with neglect after doing lots of FJR mies.

They're perfect stablemates.

I am getting used to the extra 90kg or so of FJR and really like the TDM lightness by contrast.

.

My 5 minute run to the supermarket became 2 hours. I was happy even though my wife was hungry !

I'm thinking I'll probably sell the FJR at the end of summer, once I've had use of it to do a few pillion tours.

It's a lot of bike, the weight isn't important above 5mph, the adjustable screen and cruise control are nice farkles too. The silky smooth push from 25mph to top speed in fifth gear will be missed though !

Going for MOT 12.15 today at a test centre I've not used before so no idea how picky, the usual bunch I use lost their ticket for 2 years so something major had been overlooked on a spot check.

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - Snowbird - 04-04-2025

Passed with no advisories other than a "that chain could do with a bit of a nip up" to which I replied "did that earlier to keep you happy, gonna back it off 1/4 turn when I get home", I did point out that TDM's are renowned for needing a bit of slack.

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - LIAW - 05-04-2025

that's good, some people don't seem to understand that some bikes need more free play than others, mine doesn't like being charged for Shakespeare

Set the timing ready for cam chain tensioner change as soon as it arrives from Japan hopefully this week sometime

Valve clearances completed but some reassembly still required, as is annual rear suspension service. MOT now due too

EDIT if some of you were nonplussed by a wave from a BMW Rallye 1250 rider a couple of weeks ago          it was me (likely).
