What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - paul047 - 11-04-2022

I used a product called SCALE_X  which is part phosphoric acid.  Used it with green Scotchbrite, miracles! Then metal polish for the shine.   Today I've been chasing electric gremlins on my Beemer, now ready to sell. Shan't miss it.......

Took the niners for an mot and picked up a nail in the rear tyre on the way there. It passed though. What is it about new tyres that attract sharp objects to spoil your day?

Unlucky Trev, I'll be getting paranoid about my new boots now.

It is what it is, but It's happened to three vehicles either fairly soon after new boots or purchase in the case of one of them. All within about 1k miles. All easily sorted though.

Looking for some way to get the pipes on my 9'er back to silver. They are "shiny" as I have polished them but the stain remains.  Started reading up on stainless steel and Harpic etc but I am worried about the effect of the acid on the metal.  I have used muriatic acid (aka hydrochloric acid) to strip chrome off parts and stainless steel has a chrome component.  Could anyone alleviate my concerns?   Is Scale-X a safer altenative?

When I fitted a franke stainless steel sink the instructions said not to use bleach on it (never looked into why), it's been bleached many times and not yet corroded or spontaneously combusted, I'd be more worried about acid products on stainless, that said a lot of boaty types use oxalic acid to clean stains from just about everything, I've not used it myself so can't tell you anything more useful.

Just a thought. How about dishwasher tablets in a dilute solution? I’ve not tried it on stainless exhausts, but they’re pretty good at stain removal on most metal things.

Just found https://www.finishing.com/102/09.shtml the other day - this site has a lot of discussions on stainless steel exhaust cleaning

Scale-X ingredients here

https://upload.interconchemical.com/uploads/ingredients/intercon/scale_x.html

Water + phosphoric acid + surfactant (wetting agent, as used in shower gels)

Phosphoric acid is cheap and readily available, you could probably use citric acid too. I know citric acid works well to clear out corossion, because the day after a put some in my central heating system it ate through what was left of the cast iron heat exchanger in my 25 year old boiler, and so started dripping , and then dribbling. It was about to go anyway, but citric acid finished it off !

Think I used Harpic 10x on my downpipes, Removes the staining but can leave a black residue which then needs to be polished off.
