When weather turns to politics. - TonyDevil - 26-05-2006 during the Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian conflict a few years ago there were a number of asylum seekers settled in Southend. The put Croatians down one street and Bosnians a couple of roads away. They ended up having a gun battle in the street! yes i agree that there is a level of shite in any population, but i'd be interested to see what sort of percentage of crime is perpetrated by immigrants (legal, illegal & asylum seekers). An immigrant to me, is someone who isnt naturalised ie doesnt embrace the culture of the area they have moved to. I know plenty of people of asian origin who i am proud to call my friends, however I also know others, both immigrant and 2nd/3rd generation who just want to extend their own culture over here, they definitly wouldnt pass the cricket test. I must admit that i see the benefits of the Australian immigrantion process, if anyone is willing to go through that hardship then it must be bad where they came from and they deserve a place to call home. I am a tolerant person, i'm not racist, neither am i homophobic or sexist, but i do enjoy a good joke/pisstake. No matter what your views are, and peoples will differ from time to time, there is NEVER any reason to be abusive of someone else, that makes you lower than the scum you're complaining about. If you have a point to make, then make it, but give someone else equal chance to voice their's and provide constructive critism if you think its needed. I apologise for are English grammer, yes the school system(well just the English bit) failed me too. But there is also the very real spectre of a limited amount of resources going to a seemingly infinite amount of bodies. Here, the debate is fueled to an inferno even further by the very real spectre of illegal immigrants. For those that don't know, the short version is that the southern border of the US with Mexico is, in a word ... porous. Literally hundreds if not thousands of illegal immigrants cross into the US every day. To me, it's a simple enough response to say "they're here illegally, therefore they're either criminals or should be deported." Usually, they are deported, which means if they're caught they get dropped over onto their side of the border and given another chance to try again. The people who want to lock the illegals up are labeled "immigrant haters." There's illegals who have been here for years and not been caught. There are also very real arguments about how difficult it is to immigrate legally here. It literally takes years ... 15 to 20 years in some cases. I don't really know why that is. The other issue is, the illegals are coming here because there are jobs for them that pay a better wage than what they can get at home. People say they're doing jobs that legal citizens won't do (manual labor, housekeeping, gardening, field workers, etc). But they are also doing jobs that used to go to skilled carpenters and other trades, because they will do that job for a lesser wage. I blame the people that hire them -- and the fact that it is apparently easy enough to get fake documents. So ... anyway, the vote these past few months is filled with heated debate on this issue. It's not going away any time soon. So what's with the ban on knives in the UK? (changing subject!) You all gonna have to cut your bagels with a spoon now? What up with that? There is a whole economic impact of "allowing" illegal immigration ... the farmers, contractors, hotels, and other big businesses benefit from a cheap labor pool. They're keeping quiet about the issue publically, but you know they're pushing through lobbying efforts to not make changes to the status quo. Then there are the truly corrupt businesses that exacerbate the problem by paying cash (therefore the wages can't be counted - no record kept, aren't taxed, and the illegals aren't paying into the social system -- meaning they can use the schools, roads, emergency medical and other social services that are paid for by my wage taxes, essentially for free). The employer's who are so underhanded as to do this often are paying less than minimum wage, as well. Which allows them an additional unfair advantage over their honest business competition. And the illegals prefer the cash pay because you have to have a bank account to cash a check. Or ... if they are paid by check, they line up every week at a check cashing place (not a bank, a business service) that charges them an exorbitant fee (2% or something like that) to cash their weekly paycheck. I'd put all of those people in jail if I could ... the least they're doing is not helping. Sorry for the rant, this is all very close to home ... I'd put all of those people in jail if I could ... the least they're doing is not helping. Sorry for the rant, this is all very close to home ... I agree. Illegal immigration is, in most developed countries, an economic imperative. Mainly the 'conservative rich' are against it for the proposed reason that "the illegals aren't paying into the social system --". They skip over the fact that if most illegal work were under unions and the like a head of lettuce would cost 10 times as much. More automation is being introduced into the picking business but some items simply do not lend themselves to machinery. If they simply stopped illegal payments then every 'illegal' would be paying at least something for the services they use. Personally I think it is a republican attempt to draw attention away from the mishandling of the war and political nonfeasance. When weather turns to politics. - steveglover - 27-05-2006 Phew! Was started out as a low brow BNP rant against immigrants has turned into a degree level thesis on the inability of the US government to discharge its duties. "...political nonfeasance" - I had to look it up on Wikipedia. Keep it up guys (Tom and Darcy) you've raised the average IQ level of all posters by about 500 points. Makes a change from talking about big ends. Oops, I've given Wick a chance to come in there... |
