Part placebo and part luck; most bikes won't buck and carry-on all the time.



In my case, and others, it was yes it works... no hang-on, it doesn't... yes... no... oh feck it, what's going on.



Fuel quality and atmospherics can have a play in it too.



Since I've cured my 900-ills, by overriding the A/F, I cruise around town happily and smoothly at around 3200RPM... which is right where it used to hunt. Air-box flap working as OEM intended.

You did a good job on your bike mate and took the time to get it perfect, hats off to you! Well worth the time, money and effort I think.



My bike, airbox related for the thread if you don't want to hear my dribble skip the rest...



What it was like standard:

Idle was good, 3000-4000 rpm very unsteady at constant throttle both at a stand still and on the road, power was peaky around 4k lots of grunt then quickly flattened off fornthe rest of the range, massive engine braking like you've switched off the ignition, fuel econ very good. Noise from exhaust = NONE.



Pre custom map but all other mods done that's in my sig:

Idle very good, 3000-4000 rpm now very steady a tiny stutter now and then at 3200 but otherwise dead steady, power now very smooth no real peaks to speak of pulls smoothly through the rev range with no lurching at all totally different to ride as your now unaware of the rev range unlike before what I mean is you can trundle along in town look down and be right in the problem area that was awkward before, engine braking is totally changed it now does roll on nice when off the throttle but without the huge shut off it had before, fuel econ unknown. Nosie from exhaust = LOUD....lol No popping thanks to PAIR system disabled.



Going to map it next week when I have time but I don't feel it will change a lot from now only be spot on AFR wise, can't tell where it is AFR by riding but will get the sniffer out and see where she's at..



Overall I think it's a massive improvement but a lot of money, pipes, filter, PC3 etc I do agree with others that Yamaha could have done more to smooth it out! It's deceptive as smooth power delivery never feels fast unlike peaky power that leads you to believe a bike is quick, anyway you all know the score I just thought I dribble on a bit and bore you all....

Did the air box mod not too long after buying my 2000 miler TDM9 after suffering with a snatchy slow speed ride from the off. I thought adding an aftermarket can and K&N filter sorted it to some degree, but deffo never cured it. Recently, starting thinking about the issue again, so tuther day decides to undo the mod and connect the pipe back up again... Been for the first ride out today, since changing things back and gotta say have been blown away how more refined it is now at them slow speeds, junctions n roundabouts. A massive improvement! Didn't have to 'set myself up' n feather things at all really. Had the Mrs with me and half the time just bumbled around the countryside with hardly a sign of the roughness I come to expect and live with in the past. 15-25mph on tight turns, slippy, narrow, undulating tracks n roads was easy. My 9er was a pleasure to ride!

Could possibly put some of the 'improvement' after I originally did the mod to the Placebo effect, but to be fair it actually did feel a little better at the time... Well, up to around 9000 odd miles now and placebo had deffo nowt to do with it this time. Whatever has changed/bedded in I don't know?..., but I'm dead chuffed it has!!

How did you do that? I see a lot of the Triumph Bonneville owners disable and or remove the Air injection system on there bikes to reduce surging, poping and blueing of ex pipes.

Easy mate, locate the pulsed air intake pipe on the airbox and plug it up, marble works well or a plastic bung, pulsed air pipe runs from the rocker cover to a selonoid valve and then to the airbox where it takes its fresh air. Does stop 95% of over run popping. My bike runs no O2 sensor, PC3, fully open air box (no flapper), K and N filter and Beauwulf cans.. engine braking is smooth as is acceleration and the bike never hunts or has any flat spots what so ever.

If you use the 'stick a screw init' version how are they going to know.

Put it back to normal if you take it in for a service, or it doesn't work.

What a difference!

 

The change was very evident: 30mph in 3rd is a lot less jerky and it pulls better when in a high gear at low revs - just like a twin should.

 

Just need to do a distance run now to see if the MPG is affected. Wink

I bought my TDM back in June and didn't know about this mod - so when I removed the tank in doing some routine maintenance I notice the breather tube had been disconnected. I got the bike serviced last week and asked the garage to check it out - They fitted a new air filter and re-connected the breather tube.

 

The bike felt different - not only 'snatchier' at low speed but 'stiffled' somehow - Anyway, I then read about this mod and I have just used option1 and taken the bike for a quick spin and it feels much better - snatchiness has pretty much gone. Thanks JBX - I just made a small donation thru paypal - worth a fiver I think.

I just did my 2002 model, and it has made a difference, Other than this mod my bike is completely stock  I can now take the bike down to less than 2500 RPM in top and pull away cleanly, 2000RPM is possible but probably not good for the bike. I used the first JBX method, just removing the brown and black wire from the plug, it took me an hour but if I had to do it again it would take 10 minutes. I didn't like the sound of plugging a pipe with a screw or something else I found lying on the floor of the garage.

 

 

I can't believe that the bike has been on the road for 11 years and 80000kms and the mod wasn't done. I'd say the fueling isn't perfect, not as good as my Kwaka W650, but it behaves more like I thought it should. Roundabouts no longer hold any fears.

This is the method i used, it may already have been listed but i aint reading 13 pages of replies to find out!

1 you need a pair of extra long nosed pliers to remove the rubber pipe to engine air inlet just behind and above the oil filler pipe on right hand side of engine,2 plug pipe,3 replace pipe job done 5mins max.

it took me longer to write this than do the job, you just need something to use as a plug! ie a ball bearing or a screw.

and yes it worked great on my 04 model, it pulls clean from 2000! and on a tight slow corner just use the B----- clutch.

I've previously owned a Mki 850 which I found to be a really good bike. Kept that for a couple of years then bought a new Mk2 850 in 2001 which I rode for ten years. Why I ever sold that bike I don't know. It was definitely the best all round bike I've ever owned. (I still hanker after it) Anyway, I then went oddball and bought a brand new Aprilia Mana (semi auto) which I have to say was pretty amazing, though a tad too small for me (6ft 2") I put 18,000 miles on the Aprilia and found it terrific for commuting to London, especially when I was blatting around the congested streets of old smoke. Then I sold that and got the 900, basically because TDM's kind of stick in your psyche and never leave. On my first time out on the 900, all those memories of low down torque and fantastic rides I had on my 850 came flooding back. I was a happy camper - until I had to filter past slow moving traffic. Oh oh! something didn't feel right. After a day or so I was starting to regret buying it as I found it really narky at low revs in traffic. It was snatching and trying to stall all the time. I figured that maybe I was just getting old and perhaps the Aprilia Mana had made me too complacent (it was after all very easy to ride around town in traffic)

I then joined the carpe tdm crew and noticed this airbox mod thingammy. So I did Mod 1 (pulling out the B/Br cable from the ECU) and that was that - sorted! No more snatching at low revs and the engine pulls better from virtually nowhere and ticks over better too. I feel like I can actually enjoy the bike now. Many thanks whoever put that link on there. Saved me from selling my lovely metallic blue TDM. Now I'm going to turn the 900 into another 10 year keeper like my old 850, I reckon.

I think it looks good from the right side - the left is a bit bulky - maybe a torque converter/fluid flywheel/oil tank in there - odd looking...............

Today I installed a set of Leo Vince slip ons and took off for a quick ride - that hesitation  around 2-3000rpm gone. Must be just breathing better.  Hot today 30deg C and about 60% humidity.  Rode for about an hour the bike now sounds like a bike and not a sewing machine.

Hi all, I have done the airbox mod - taken out wire from ecu but have heard any 9er post 2008 it doesn't really effect it? My biggest concern is I would like to drop in a k&n filter and as I already have pipes I'm worried having the flap open all the time may make the bike on too lean side of things? Any experiences or advice would be great

One of the good things with injection, all the sensors should compensate for those sort of mods.
