September G2G 2008 - iand1947 - 17-09-2008 Dunno what Tam suggested but this would summarise the Galloway experience while keeping off the A75where possible. Option to cut from "B" to "E" September G2G 2008 - Hawmaw - 17-09-2008 Thats it , I've given up my bunk to Tony. Purely on financial grounds I'm afraid. I'll still be coming down on Saturday morning to meet up somewhere for a rideout. I'll send out a few PMs next week to get mobile numbers so I can make contact on the Saturday morning. I came home that way in the pishing rain after the RTT in July<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> Thanks Dandy. The loop has a mixture of twisties, coastal and upland scenery and other photogenic stuff - villages, old abbies etc. Surfaces are generally good. If there's a half-hour spare time when in Dumfries, I recommend a wee buzz down the Glencaple Road (past where I used to live) to the mouth of the River Nith and round by Caerlaverock Castle, both for the road and for the visuals. There is also an important bird reserve - Peter Scott among others studied there. Important for migrating geese etc. Depending on taste, you can continue round to Dumfries, or I suggest a wee byway wander across the Lochar Moss via Powfoot (where an ailing Rabbie Burns tried the seaside air as a hoped for cure) to Ruthwell where (topical touch) a certain Mr Duncan (ahem!) opened the first bank in the world; it also has a nice old Celtic cross. Then continue on secondary roads to Annan and rejoin the main drag eastward. Route: Visit My Website September G2G 2008 - iand1947 - 17-09-2008 PS Newton Stewart, Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright (pronounced "Kirkoobry" btw, youse furriners!) are all quite pleasant wee places = potential cake stops. Dumfries....er....well.... September G2G 2008 - Guest - 17-09-2008 Change in plan! looks like I will be finishing work at 02:00ish on friday morning now so depending on the weather and my ability to pack in the dark should be able to meet up that morning some place with those using M6 on the way up. I think last year we joined up at the little chef off the A65. Any place will do as long as I'm on me bike Shame Hawman is day tripping as I'm in the same boat money wise. The more I earn the more she spends Should have enough for a nice surf and turf at the pub though + nice glass of spritser September G2G 2008 - iand1947 - 17-09-2008 <!--quoteo(post=97518:date=Wed 17th Sep 2008, 12:17 PM:name=TonyDevil)-->QUOTE(TonyDevil @ Wed 17th Sep 2008, 12:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->anyone fancy a lap of the scottish cost after the G2G ? i aint gotta be back to work til 6th Oct <!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> Surre - the westward continuation along the coast via Wigtown, Whithorn etc. is nice - except Stranraer!! September G2G 2008 - iand1947 - 17-09-2008 Historical PS 1) John Paul Jones, founder of the US Navy, was born at Arbigland: see "A" on this map - Visit My Website He and his US mates later mounted a fairly shoddy invasion of England! (at Whitehaven, across the Solway) 2) Keep in the good books - send the wife/GF/whoever a card from Sweetheart Abbey (at New Abbey: see "B" on the same map), where Devorgilla, the wife of John Baliol (early King of Scotland) buried his embalmed heart - hence the word. Dead romantic, ye might say? 3) The back-country of what is now the Galloway Forest (between "B" and "C" on the map in my first posting #243) used to be the haunt of Sawney Bean and family - legendary cannibals who waylaid travellers, as a possible origin of the Sweeney Todd story, so don't break down - you never know..... September G2G 2008 - TonyDevil - 17-09-2008 Pict, if you (or anyone else out there) is serious about joining me send a PM and we can discuss September G2G 2008 - iand1947 - 17-09-2008 <!--quoteo(post=97536:date=Wed 17th Sep 2008, 02:00 PM:name=TonyDevil)-->QUOTE(TonyDevil @ Wed 17th Sep 2008, 02:00 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->Pict, if you (or anyone else out there) is serious about joining me send a PM and we can discuss<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd--> Would love to have made the trip, Tony, but I'm stuck in domestic crap at the moment. September G2G 2008 - Guest - 17-09-2008 I was up the A75 last year they have put a lot of speed limits on the by-pass, Lots of going about!! Hartside will know better he was on it coming back from the RTT |
