Just looked at the wiring diagrams and the mk1 doesn't have the white wire, strange that the learner mode wasn't introduced until the mk2 came out. Mk1 is a lot smoother at low revs though.
Do you know if disabling it has improved the bike at all ? Or is it possible that the replacement carbs have made the difference you mentioned ? :unsure2:

It's definitely made a difference. I disabled it lastnight and got 20 minutes on it this morning, before changing the carbs

One easy way to check if it has already been disconnected is the next time you take the left side panel off, disconnect the 6 pin plug (only 4 wires wired into it) from the ignitor, and check with a multimeter in resistance mode for continuity between the white wire terminal of the plug and earth of the frame (battery negative)...If it has been disconnected there should be no continuity to ground shown when you move the gear lever between neutral and 1st gear

The mk1 doesn't use it, but it has very simple ignition, less to go wrong with it, but without a throttle position sensor the timing cannot be advanced when you crack the throttle open in response.....mk1 timing is only advanced relative to engine speed

Strange enough, the TRX850 share the same engine with the 4TX but it does not have the 1st & 2nd gears wires.

Also strange is that the 4TX have longer 1st & 2nd gears than the 3VD, so wheelings should not be the right reason imo.

True yes, but the 3VD has a less potent advance mechanism
The throttle position sensor, TPS, of the mk2 has no effect on fuelling, only on ignition timing. It enables an amount of advance to be used in response to demands for acceleration.
The 3vd is not demand sensitive, but if it were it's overall performance would be improved.

Took the carbs off......ready for the strip and inspection, I think the emulsion tubes may be worn, it's been running but rich.
'Twas a fiddly job though, especially when you're trying to work in a small shed! The stripdown of the carbs will be done in the warmth and space of the front room............when she's out one day

Ridden it to do some selfish Christmas shopping (I had no Aperol & Prosecco left darling), a hew heater for the shed was also required, - nearly had to switch the heated grips on cos I stayed out playing  enjoying the ride on dry roads in the sunshine (an excuse to empty the tank prior to some maintenance).

Stripped l/h carb. Emulsion tube doesn't appear to be badly worn, but will probably do it anyway, as it's apart now. Float bowl had a very interesting brown dust (rust) in it, so full carb strip and clean is in order..... One carb top screw was pretty tight, but gave up after a while!

Throttle bodies - £50
Fuel pump - £40

£270 for fully programmable fueling and ignition....But i find these well tuned carbs to be 'adequate' just now

Rode it from Harlow to Potters Bar to meet up with pals at 0630 am on Saturday for the journey up to the NEC Bike Show in -2 Deg C. Â Bought ear plugs and rode it home again in 3 deg C. Â Lost BSM in the dark on the M6 (yes I was worried!) and found him again on the A14 (happy days). Â Rode it to the Bike Shed in London yesterday and home again, not so cold this time. Â Have I mentioned I love my TDM?
