Quote:Also worth fitting new valve stem seals. Smile

Have a full gasket set, including seals on it's way now.  Smile

Considering new oil rings on the pistons while they're out. The MK2 doesn't seem to use as much oil (from what I've read) I was wondering of the oil rings, or main rings were different....time to delve into the parts manual !

Made a bead breaker out of 2 pieces of wood, a threaded bar, 3nuts, 3 washers and a post base for casting into a concrete base. Success at 1st attempt ! Will show pics later.

Part of the project "fixing-up-my-mate's-er6-that-fell-over-last-year-and-has-only-barely-been-ridden-since-new-in-2006".

Next project: Finding a 14mm unbraco bit to loosen that f&5#!@€ front wheel bolt.

They both use oil tbh.  A cyclinder hone and new rings helped reduce oil consumption on the mk2a I had.

It did on your Mk1 as well, and new valve stem seals reduced it even further.

Thanks for that

I'll see what the budget can stretch to and do the best for the bike that I can.

The gaskets are the most expensive bit so it's worth seeing what else you can do while you're in there.

I know...... and I knew it would all go this way once I started poking about looking for weak spots, lol.

I have a reputation for rebuilding an engine and then wanting to keep the bike it's in....so if that holds true in a few weeks or so I might be selling my 9er, but we'll see...one of them will have to go though, my daughter is doing her CBT in three weeks and I need room !

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - ChrisG - 13-07-2016

I planned to rebuild by Mk1 when 3rd gear started playing up, but baulked at the price of all the gaskets and parts needed to do it, so I bought a 9er and sold the Mk1 to AlunL, who bought a niner and sold the Mk1 to Studley, and 5 or 6 years on it's still running about with 4.5 gears Big Grin

Still on my 'to do' list although I've found it to be perfectly rideable as is. Big Grin  Hoping it won't need another top end refurb as it uses very little oil thanks to Chris's efforts. Smile

Tbh, if you're splitting the casings on the engine and it's done a fair few miles you're probably wise to refurb the top end whilst your at it.  I tried not doing this on my mk2a with 43,000 miles but ended up with an engine that used more than twice as much oil as it previously did.  2-3 months later I did a top end refurb as using 2 liters of oil per 1000 miles was annoying to say the least.

By top end refurb do you mean the valves and guides too ?  These are all in pretty good nick and sealing well in the guides as far as I can tell, was just going to change the stem seals and maybe dremmel a few bits to smooth the ports, then clean and lap the valves

I have this set of gears from my MK1....if the gear you need isn't fixed to the output shaft you can take them

What Have You Done To Your Tdm Today? - Studley Ramrod - 13-07-2016

Whatever is needed really.  ChrisG had new guides, I didn't need them.

Thanks for the offer but I've already got a spare mk1 gearbox. :good:

I've always meant that 3rd gear is overrated. This supports my view !  :pimp:

Part from that, I talked to a guy about painting my old cow. Cheap !

OK,I'll shove it up for you tomorrow as I'm busy drinking beer tonight. Droop.

Flash is effective as it backed a few off last Sunday on my overnight run north from Farnborough.

Both pics taken with flash to reduce the glare/flare factor

Cheers Favs you da man  :good: so you have a nice slot for that 3rd brake light, think mine might look a bit odd right on top of the box, still going there though, do you have the choice of 2 brightness levels on that reflector !!

PS still sore from last time you were droopy  Tongue
