is it only me? - jiff - 21-03-2006

I'm having real proplems with the new site.
Though I had no difficulty registering(and subsequently being recognised) every other visit turns into a gut-wrenching source of frustration and disappointment. I recognise no discernable logic in the site architecture to guide my navigation, and finding my way to previously welcoming areas of the Forum feels like wrestling with an enigmatic multiple choice pick'n mix, whose unwelcoming character simply encourages me to give up in despair.
As far as I can see no-one else has raised a peep of discontent, so maybe I'm suffering some sort of personalised technical incomprehension (I'm on dial-up 50.6kbps)).............or have I just "lost it"?
It seems graceless to complain - given the fantastic efforts you put in to keep this marvelous site going - but it does feel as if the previous simple and direct structure has been ditched along with the bathwater

Wah? I think it's great. There's a 'View New Posts' option up in the upper right hand corner of the screen and a 'breadcrumb' in the upper left-hand side (in this case 'Carpe TDM Forum > Start your Engine > Carpe Admin & News > is it only me?') that you can use to quickly bounce up & down inside the different topics of the Forum by clicking on the relevent sub-grouping.

Now that I'm used to it I think this is a much better site, I don't see much difference in terms of navigating it but I like all the little extras.

So it must be an age thing Alan [Image: tongue.gif]

I think an 80 year old would be a bit too young for him, he'd never keep up [Image: tongue.gif]

I think its partly getting used to a new site, it can all be a bit frustrating to start off with trying to figure out so many new bits.

I nearly lost me noodles when the "old old" forum changed to the "old" forum.....took me a while to settle in again!

I have to agree with dapleb on that one, each time I have gone form one forum to the next version it has been a relearning experience. Even if we were still on forum #2 we would have to adjust if something new was added. There will be bugs for a while, we just have to grin and bear it.

Maybe if we had some of the old look to the new forum it would make the transition easier.
Does this help?

Sidebar:
I was in my blog wondering why it wasn't showing the last entry... then I realized it was a draft and hit 'publish' and there it was. When I looked at my blog settings I found out that the administrator had not authorized me to make the blog that I had just edited and published....

BTW, Big Bird's blog is a very nice read.

is it only me? - daveinthailand - 22-03-2006

I like the 'view new posts option.'
I appreciate the efforts made by few for many.
The forum is a bit 'straight out the box' and could do with a pic of a TDM here or there instead of just blue css boxes with gradients.
Community feel has pretty much come straight back.
I still have to scroll down on the homepage to get to the forum link.

is it only me? - jiff - 22-03-2006

well I guess I'll get-there like everyone else - & I reckon AE is right, in that I'd already noticed that some of the 'older' (longer established?) contributors were not posting with the same fizzy enthusiasm as the relatively sprightlier ones - and I'll certainly admit to being amongst the more ancient (where are you J.Andreis).
But I do think that a bit of tinkering to clean it all up would be a help..................for instance I think I've twigged that most effective 'navigation' goes on via the left-hand third of the display, even though I still find it a bit pick 'n mix, but for the life of me I can't get my head round the significance of the items occupying the right-hand two thirds....why is TAMs post about tyres sitting in such a prominent position day after day?....... why when I click the link to the TDM home page or the 'make a comment' live link, do I come back to the same place.....................and just to add insult to injury, I agree that a bit of 'Carpe style' identity would be great, and I too wish I didn't have to scroll down the home page to get to the forum link.................................and notwithstanding that I'm only on dialup, does a 50.6 kbps speed condemn me to a read-only (or some other lesser level) of participation..............and will the length of my posts make others wish I was silenced............permenantly........OK, guys enough already!......................G

Def! Would be nice if a TDM or Carpe-TDM logo was up in the top where it says (kind of generically) Invision.

Still coming in thru the old link? Soon as you pop in here re-bookmark it and call it Carpe-TDM (NEW)
That will save a bit of time.

It's in the same spot because it's been 'pinned'...

Since 'tyres' was always such a popular thread Admin has given it a permanent spot.
The IRC post in Hyde Park has also been pinned, you will find more as time goes by.

It works more smoothly for me, though a bit off putting the first time I looked at it. It needs a bit of dirt on it! Can it be customised appearance-wise with some TDM related stuff as Dave suggests? I am not really going to carp as I appreciate the effort Guinness and others put into setting it up and keeping it going, which must be collossal. Well done guys.

The lo-fi version referred to is fast loading for dial-up users. (No pictures, read only)
You can switch to lo-fi on any page just by going all the way to the bottom and clicking lo-fi version (center screen)

You haven't been around much to defend yourself, and I don't want a fair fight, I wanna win, but if you're back now I'll find someone else to harass, who can't fight back. [Image: huh.gif]
