lAs some of you may remember in the days of light and warmth I had a foobared battery, anyway changed battery now tdm still draining battery just what is needed at 5.30am.

Any body had an Electrex World replacement for regulator/rectifier rr98 (3vd replacement), if so is it a better unit, a straight swop, worth getting?

Regards the grumpy one

let me get this straight, he switched his broken yamaha reg/rect for one of the most notoriously failing ones available??
(truth be told: the failing reg/rects on the VFR are due to overheating because of bad positioning behind fairing/frame [Image: wink.gif] )

No idea, I know nothing about VFR's. But he fitted a one from a different bike (which I believe to be a VFR) and it gave him good results (well got him to NZ at least).

EDIT: "The regulator seems to be a weak point on the TDM - I have been through 4 in 240 000 kms - now have replaced with one from a VFR800 rated at 35W rather than the TDMs 25W so will never die again."

my battery keeps going flat (it is new) same problem as with old battery
is the electrex rr98 a straight swop or does one have to do choppy wirey,
does it improve charge rate?
cheers ripper,<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I have fitted an Electrex reg recto my 1994 mk1 and it was a straight swap. But I think the earlier mk1's have a different & smaller reg rec, which I can't tell you if its a straight swap.

later mk1
earlier mk1 and XTZ750

but I see they are now listing this for the pre 1994 TDM's. so it depend what one you have fitted. IIRC the earlier mk1 has the RR on the right hand side of the frame near the head stock & the later mk1 its on the left.

REgulater/rectifier - wicklamulla - 02-12-2006

good info, thanks folks.

REgulater/rectifier - ripper - 02-12-2006

Thank you good people I think one shall purchase (swear word in yorkshire) said item, cross fingers, get out tarot cards, seek spirit guidance etc.,

REgulater/rectifier - ChrisG - 02-12-2006

I put a genuine Yam one one when mine died (fried my battery by delivering way too much voltage and left me with a 4 hour wait for the RAC [Image: ranting.gif] ), however someone did post that they'd bought the Electrex one and it seemed to be a lot cheaper. Be careful though as they seem to vary with year. My 1994 Mk1 has it on the right of the frame, and someones else which was only 1 year differnt to mine had it on the left and it looked totally different (might have been Dapleb)

REgulater/rectifier - dapleb - 02-12-2006

Yeah, as Tam mentioned, the early MkI's are a diff size and diff side of frame....dunno if they are still interchangeable though.

I fitted one to my 92 mk1. you have to make a small plate ( L shaped ) fit one end to the mounting bracket and the other sits on top of the frame, drill and pop rivet this end. drill a hole approx in middle of plate big enough to take fixing screw . you will also have to cut a small corner off the end of the black piece of inner fairing . Hope this helps. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

REgulater/rectifier - ripper - 02-12-2006

It's on right just inside fairing upper

REgulater/rectifier - wicklamulla - 03-12-2006

Dap, thanks for the link back to here. I thought we were missing a few posts. [Image: good.gif]

REgulater/rectifier - Godzillamonster - 03-12-2006

Gidday,

I'm now running one from a VFR800 as I got sick of Yammie TDM regulators eventually dieing... Yammie ones only rated 25W - very close to what the bike draws.... VFR800 rated 35W = no more problems EVER !!!!

Bike still going strong - gets used every day commuting, pulling wheelies, etc - regulator seemed to be the only real weak point.

REgulater/rectifier - TonyDevil - 04-12-2006

mine had to be replaced as it had blown the battery, all fuses on the bike and every light bulb that was on when the battery went, including the right hand side indicators [Image: sad.gif]

i put an electrex heavy duty one on my mk1.
think is was an RR98 (?), no complaints 1year & 13000miles later [Image: good.gif]

REgulater/rectifier - cupasoop - 04-12-2006

Strange that the tdm rectumfrier has a bad reputation, a usual honda upgrade is to replace their crappy retumfriers with one from either a r1 or r6. They dont seem to go bad and can be picked up on ebay for about 10 or 15 quid.

I assumed all yamaha ones were the same [Image: huh.gif]

REgulater/rectifier - ripper - 05-12-2006

Just received reg/rect from Electex World RR98 ordered Sunday £45.00 +p&p and VAT now just to fit and hopefully forget
