This is starting to really jar me off! - King OFF the Road - 04-01-2007

Does anyone else have a problem with the little icons that allegedly let you know if there have been new posts (on the left of the forum pages). They have a mind of their own. I read the new ones, close my browser, come back later and some have gone back to green even when no new posts have been added (buggered if I can remember which ones I've read until I get to the bottom and find nothing new).
My PC accepts cookies and have even set Carpe as a trusted site but it still happens (but not every time). [Image: ranting.gif] [Image: notfunny.gif] [Image: ranting.gif] [Image: notfunny.gif] [Image: ranting.gif] [Image: notfunny.gif] [Image: ranting.gif] [Image: notfunny.gif] [Image: ranting.gif]
Am I being to overly anal or is there something going wrong?

Try clicking on the home page when you've read the new posts. [Image: blink.gif]

I always wished <i>each</i> post could be marked 'as read'... Not much point in me reading 'TDM Spotting' posts...

ahh but it can

read all the others then goto home page and click bottom right

if it is doing that then there is somit going wrong on your computer.
try flushing your cookies (make sure you know all the passwords) and if that doesnt work try flushing the entire browser temporary files.

[attachment=o243]
that is a tool for setting threads/sections/or even entire forum as read.
it resides at the top of the page

This is starting to really jar me off! - stu - 05-01-2007

I just click 'View New Posts' - [Image: cool.gif]

Me too.

This is starting to really jar me off! - King OFF the Road - 05-01-2007

This is when I have clicked on view new post!
There is to much in the cookies to flush them, but browser history is emptied regularly.

Andy it happens to me too sometimes, i tink if a post is edited it flags up as "unread" again, also even when you convince yersen ya have completely read all the posts it sometimes still shows up as unread !!! i just "mark it as read" and give up !!!

This is starting to really jar me off! - King OFF the Road - 05-01-2007

Its more than that Wick, I can read 6 or 8 posts, go off and do something come back 10 min's later and they are all re-highlighted as updated when they are not?

...which has been giving me problems [Image: sad.gif] - see other thread relating to "display".

Incidentally, I'm not conversant with these things, but is our little world of Carpe backed up anywhere? I'd hate it all to evaporate.

are you using microsoft internet explorer?
next time it happens
press CTRL+F5 ...

if that solves the problem its either a proxy issue or the browser settings, where it is set not to "recheck with server" every time you visit the page... although..; how else does it know there is a new post...

and you can delete one particular cookie by going into the folder and deleting all files named @carpe-tdm.net

I am starting to think I should give this up as a bad job, I have tried all off your suggestions Guinness.
IE6 and 7 (6 on the laptop 7 on the tower system) they both have this problem.
CTRL+F5 had no effect.
Deleting the carpe cookie appeared to work, initially things looked better, until I realised I had just been logged out. When I logged back in and we are back to square one (my chosen colour "carpedesert" was restored so this must be stored on the sever).

andy i have found that whenever i read any thread and then use the menu at the top to return to the same group or another , the item stays marked unread.

so i found a workaround . hope this makes sense whenever the thread is read after the last post there is a section bottom right of the screen that says the group name that the thread is in. if i use this one on the bottom of the page by clicking on it and going back into the same group, the thread then ends up marked as read. no other method works for me.

hope that makes sense "it did when i typed it"

Amarko i get around that by refreshing the page, then it's blue no longer.

if you use the Back function from teh browser it will not adjust the read/unread status.
you have to return to the forum using the links.

wicki's method (refresh) is also correct and can be used after using the browser's back function.
